    Nursing home staffing data explained

Reported staffing helps you ask better questions. It cannot tell you which staff will be on duty when your loved one arrives.

    Understand what is being reported

CMS Payroll-Based Journal data captures facility-reported daily staffing information. Nursing staff categories and reporting periods matter. NursingHomes.io displays available CMS staffing measures separately from reviews and retains their source context.

Do not confuse reported hours with a promised schedule

Hours per resident day is a reported staffing measure, not a promise that each resident receives that many hours of one-to-one attention. Care needs, job roles and the timing of coverage affect the experience. Ask about the actual care plan and current shift coverage.

    Ask about weekends and nights

Compare available weekday and weekend measures when they share a reporting period. Ask who is on duty overnight, how urgent needs are escalated and how absences are covered. Missing weekend information does not establish that staffing is absent.

Discuss continuity as well as hours

Ask about staff turnover, consistent assignments, agency staff, orientation and supervision. Historical turnover measures provide context but do not identify today’s team. Ask the administrator what has changed and how continuity is maintained.

Keep careers separate from care evidence

Historical staffing data is not a current job listing. People seeking work can submit a city-based application, but current roles, pay, qualifications and vacancies must be verified with the employer.
